sFUNergy [fun' er jee] n. Synergy to the power of fun.

I coined the word "sFUNergy" when I was sharing how amazing my team was at Bank of America. I shared that my team would do anything to help each other be successful. The synergy was amazing and that fun was the magnifying factor. We didn't just have synergy; we had sFUNergy!

It wasn't initially that way. I remember four of the five of us worked well together but there was one who just grated us and seemed to always throw something negative into the mix. Life seemed to drag when we were around him. The phrase "one bad apple spoils the rest" could not have been truer. Needless to say he didn't last long and once free of this individual, the team produced 3 years of project work in five months and with exceptional results.

Even though my title was team manager, nobody was the leader yet everyone led. The expert in any given area became the leader. We respected each other's experience and trusted each other's decisions. That didn't mean we didn't challenge each other, but it was to push each other in producing the best solution. The team always looked to serve one another. We did team building at my cabin on the local lake. We met early at breakfast, went to lunch together, played pool after work, got to know each other's families...we just liked being together. Some weeks we worked long hours and others just a day or two. We worked hard and as a reward, we played hard too. And we always got the job done, under budget and ahead of schedule.
